Labris is an organization which considers the right to different sexual orientation one of the basic human rights and works on the elimination of all forms of violence and discrimination against lesbians and women of different sexual orientation than heterosexual.

In this way we would like to severely condemn the statements of Mr. Petar Lađevic, the chief of Human and minority rights department, given in an interview published in today’s issue of a daily newspaper, Danas. Lađević has again displayed extremely unacceptable and disinterested attitude and a number of unprofessional assertions regarding the state of human rights in our country.

Labris – lesbian human rights organization condemns and finds intolerable the statement given by Petar Lađević, the chief of Human and minority rights department, saying that he feels equally disturbed by both “the manner in which the ultraconservative organizations” and “those promoting the right to homosexuality or different sexual orientations” react when it comes to homophobia.

A letter from the Psychiatric Section of the Serbian Association of Medical Doctors, send to Labris - lesbian human rights organization upon request that this domestic institution confirm the official position the World Health Organization has held for 18 years, stated that „homosexuality is not a disease.“

Same-sex oriented people in Serbian printed media

On January 1, 2008, "Labris" - Lesbian Human Rights Organization began a new cycle of analyzing the daily print media in Serbia. In other words, Labris scans the texts for LGBTIQ topics and/or terminology and assesses the reasons for, the manner of, as well as the quantity and quality of reports on same-sex oriented population in daily press. Every three months Labris publishes a report with its findings.

Report on Discussion on strengthening LGBT activists’ capacity
Priština, February 16th, 2008
Labris representatives took part in the panel discussion organized by the Youth Initiative for Human rights in Priština. Activists from two LGBT organizations in Priština were also present. Objective of this discussion was to strengthen capacities of LGBTTQ activism in Kosovo and to exchange ideas and experiences of these organizations as well as to initiate cooperative relation.

Interactive seminar for the ombudspersons in Vojvodina
On March 7th, 2008, per invitation from the Vojvodina Provincial Ombudsperson Petar Teofilovic and his deputy for equality of sexes Danica Todorov, two representatives of Labris - lesbian human rights organization held an interactive seminar for the employees of the Provincial Ombudsperson's office as well as several local ombudspersons from Vojvodina.

Active Job Search Seminar
On 24th and 25th of November Labris – lesbian human rights organization held a seminar for active job search for women. The seminar was organized in Labris' office space as a part of the Info Center's program. It was realized by Jovanka Corovic and Ana Bu, the coaches from Team TRI of the Civic Initiatives. The program was molded after the Civic Initiatives' program One step to a job – Program for support in employment. Six participants from Belgrade and Goc attended the seminar.

REPORT ON THE POSITION OF LGBT PEOPLE IN SERBIA
Political context:
Considering Serbia as a highly homophobic, xenophobic and nationalistic environment, affected by social and economic crises, where, in spite of the coalition of democratic parties, Serbian Radical Party is a very strong political force, we could hardly talk about LGBT human rights. LGBT rights are not recognized as basic human rights by the official governmental Agency for Human and Minority rights, but are dealt with by several LGBT NGOs and HR NGOs. Violence, discrimination and public hate speech against LGBT population happen often in public and the media.

Labris – lesbian human right organization organized the seminar Different but equal for the youth members of political parties in the period from March 28th – 31st 2007. The seminar was held in Banja Vrujci and represents a part of the project “Education and Lobbying”. Individuals from the following parties participated: Serbian Civil Alliance, Social democratic Union, Liberal Democratic Part, Vojvodina’s Social democratic League and G17+.
